Firewalls and intrusion-detection systems can protect outside users from changing your data or accessing confidential information BUT should not be the onlyline of defense, it is the first line of defense.  Delicately put, Edward Snowden was an insider.  Further, Juniper Networks firewall had / has a backdoor which was likely intruded upon by other countries spying on communication and data.
